WHAT WE DO

DCN Diagnostics is a leading supplier of contract development, industry education and strategic and technical consulting services to the rapid diagnostic industry. We develop innovative rapid test platforms for our clients, addressing applications in markets ranging from medical diagnostics to veterinary, agricultural, forensic, law enforcement, consumer and biodefense sectors. DCN is a client-centric business whose goal is to provide our clients with the solutions they require to develop, manufacture and commercialize the highest performing products in their sector.

The company is based on Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad in a custom built facility to which we moved in 2009. We are celebrating our 10th year in business this year.

WHY WE CHOSE THE 78 CORRIDOR

DCN is an international company with approximately 40 percent of our business coming from Europe, Asia and South American. However, our primary industry - the lateral flow medical device industry - has two major hubs in the US. One of those hubs is San Diego County. Being located in Carlsbad gives us a tremendous advantage when it comes to dealing with clients in the greater region. Our business model is also very collaborative, relying on input from multiple suppliers in this area, from industrial designers to machinists, high precision molders and biological reagent suppliers, all of which are readily available locally. Finally, our business is quite niche, and our employees are highly technically educated and industry-experienced people. The Corridor has a critical mass of talent that DCN needs to continue to grow.

TALENT POOL

Our people are everything to us. Our technology is somewhat niche, so we require personnel with a very particular set of work experience and a skill set that is not easily acquired academically. There is really nowhere to learn what we do outside of the industry. San Diego County holds a critical mass of experienced product developers in our space, so having that talent pool is critical to us. It would be difficult to continue to expand by relying purely on personnel we would bring in from outside the area. That said, this is a tremendous place to live and work, so it provides significant incentive for people to come join us from further afield as well.

QUALITY OF LIFE

As I mentioned, the quality of life in this area is unparalleled. From a lifestyle perspective it is easy to make the case to employees to come to live and work in this area. It also influences the outlook and culture of the business through the people working here. Our team is full of bright, energetic people who enjoy everything this area has to offer in terms of lifestyle - energy that permeates throughout our business. Our friendly, customer-centric ethos is a key part of our sales and marketing strategy, We encourage and try to grow a culture of open communication within and outside the company, very much supported by the local culture here. A portion of our business depends on clients coming to train at our facility and spend time in the area, and people really love coming here to spend extended periods so that they can work hard and also take advantage of everything the area has to offer.

LOOKING AHEAD...

The point of need diagnostic space is expanding like never before. The technology we specialize in is being applied in products used at the point of care in medical applications, like Dengue, Malaria and Zika infection, as well as in hospital settings for testing for heart attack or cancer biomarkers. Work is ongoing to integrate our technology more into the health and wellness space, including pregnancy and fertility hormone monitoring on a self-test basis and hydration monitoring during exercise. The growth of wearable technology will incorporate the type of tests that we develop in many ways, ensuring that as the industry grows, we will grow with it. Likewise, important consumer spaces like food testing for allergens such as peanut or gluten are growing steadily. Defense applications are also receiving more attention, whether testing for weaponized pathogens like anthrax or potentially socially destabilizing disease outbreaks like pandemic influenza. The technology space is booming, and DCN is in a prime position to leverage our deep technical and strategic knowledge of this space to fuel our growth, alongside the development of our technology partners in the 78 Corridor, the broader San Diego region and beyond.
